OUR TAKE
Beyond Vanity Metrics
Master the Metrics That Truly Measure Success
In a marketing landscape teeming with data, it's critical to focus on the metrics that genuinely signal business growth and success.
This newsletter will guide you through the key marketing metrics that are indispensable for any marketer striving for impactful results.
The Pitfall of Superficial Metrics
While vanity metrics like page views and social media likes are easy to track, they often do not translate to real business success. These numbers may be inflated and do not necessarily indicate an increase in profitable customer actions or long-term engagement.
Now, your VP, Director, or Manager may press upon you how important it is to track these metrics, and maybe they're correct, but these metrics will not show you how successful a campaign is where it matters: the bottom line.
To get there, we need Metrics That Matter. Ones that tell us if our campaign actually converted eyeballs to $$$$.
The Metrics That Matter
Conversion Rates: They reveal the true effectiveness of your call-to-action and marketing campaigns.
Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC): This tells you the price you pay to acquire a new customer, essential for determining the sustainability of your growth.
Customer Lifetime Value (CLV): Understanding CLV is crucial for predicting long-term profitability and informing customer relationship management.
Return on Investment (ROI): The ultimate measure of your marketing efficiency and effectiveness.
Engagement Metrics: These provide insights into the quality and depth of your customer interactions.
Each of these metrics provides a piece of the puzzle, offering a comprehensive view of your marketing strategy's performance.
Your Weekly Strategy Session
Our approach is methodical.
We've established a weekly ritual where each team member deep-dives into these metrics.
We also display these metrics in our office on a TV for all to see. We hold each other accountable for the success and failures of these metrics, and you better believe that with my weekly one-on-one, I am going over these.
This discipline ensures that our marketing strategy remains aligned with our strategic vision and drives tangible business outcomes.

Why These Metrics Are Non-Negotiable
These metrics provide more than snapshots of performance; they offer insights that are pivotal for making informed decisions. They allow us to:
Identify both strengths and weaknesses in our current marketing initiatives.
Allocate our budget more efficiently, putting dollars behind what works.
Forecast long-term growth, paving the way for sustainable success.
Allow us to move faster than our competition and be ruthless with what doesn't work.
Transform Data into Strategic Decisions
So, you have all this data, now what?
For us, we put it into a visualization tool like Looker Studio. We use Supermetrics to connect our social channels to Looker then use Looker to build out some dashboards, who doesn’t love a good dashboard?
After that we look at the data and then the fun happens, we make moves.
Looking from 10,000 ft we methodically narrow in on why something is trending, what is making this a failure or success, who picked up the post or content piece, and where it had the most impact.
Since we don’t have an unlimited budget, we need to be crystal clear on where every dollar is going and what it’s converting.
By concentrating on the right metrics, you can steer your marketing strategy towards genuine growth and profitability.
